Seminary Takes First Steps Toward Distance Learning

byzantine catholic seminaryThe Byzantine Catholic Seminary recently applied for a grant from the Koch Foundation to develop a “Smart Classroom.”

The grant, if approved, will turn an existing classroom into a smart classroom with the electronic resources for both local and eventual distance learning.  An instructor station equipped with computer and audiovisual equipment will allow a variety of media to be used in teaching: the internet, DVD/VHS playback, and PowerPoint presentations, all displayed through an interactive wall-mounted 77-inch whiteboard.

This technology, used in elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities, will allow the Seminary to further develop as a center of learning for the Byzantine Catholic tradition.  These tools, to eventually enable distance learning, are indispensable to making the Seminary’s programs available beyond the Pittsburgh area.

The Koch Foundation requires applicants to demonstrate additional financial support, and the Seminary has turned to its alumni and the clergy of the Metropolia to assist them in this important project.  The Seminary expects to hear the decision of the Foundation in March 2009.

“We believe our application with the Koch Foundation for this smart classroom is strong, but we intend to pursue this project regardless,” notes Fr. John G. Petro, Rector.  “To that end, we welcome the financial support of our friends.”

Tax-deductible donations may be sent to the Byzantine Catholic Seminary, Attn: Smart Classroom, 3605 Perrysville Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15214.
